Die Schotten sind los!
Mit ihrem siebten Album „Zenith“ im Gepäck hat die schottische Band Bleed From Within nun ihre bisher größte Headliner-Tour gestartet und wir waren beim zweiten Termin in der Live Music Hall in Köln mit dabei.
Der ausverkaufte Abend begann pünktlich mit Great American Ghost aus Boston, USA. Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2012 sind sie für ihre kompromisslose „Scheiß-drauf“-Attitüde bekannt. Auch als Opener gaben sie mit ihrem eigenständigen Nischenstil im 30-minütigen Set alles. Die zweite Band des Abends zu erwähnen, ohne sie als „Vorband“ zu bezeichnen, wäre eine Beleidigung: After the Burial aus Minnesota sind seit 2004 eine feste Größe in der Metalszene. Trotz mehrfacher Besetzungswechsel haben sie sich durchgekämpft und in Köln eine gewohnt routinierte, kraftvolle Show abgeliefert.
Schon früh war klar, dass die Stimmung großartig werden würde: Lange Schlangen am Merchandise-Stand und unzählige T-Shirts von Bleed From Within im Publikum sprachen für sich. Nach den beiden Support-Acts war die Temperatur in der Halle bereits deutlich angestiegen. Fast schon ein Glück, dass hier keine Pyrotechnik erlaubt war, wie man sie von den Festival-Auftritten der Band kennt. Dann der perfekte Einstieg: Zur Aufwärmung ertönte „Man! I Feel Like a Woman“, das abrupt von „Violent Nature“ abgelöst wurde. Von 0 auf 100 pure Energie – und Frontmann Scott Kennedy zeigte sofort, was er als Shouter/Screamer draufhat. Ein Auftakt nach Maß. Es folgte eine starke Mischung aus neuen Songs des im April erschienenen Albums, darunter „Zenith“, „A Hope in Hell“, „Dying Sun“, „God Complex“, „Hands of Sin“, „Edge of Infinity“ und als krönender Abschluss „In Place of Your Halo“. Ergänzt wurde das Set durch Fan-Favoriten wie „I Am Damnation“, „Levitate“ und natürlich den Klassiker „The End of All We Know“. Die Zeit verging wie im Flug – ein Indiz dafür, wie konstant hochklassig das Songmaterial ist.
Die Band hatte sichtlich Spaß, obwohl es auf der Bühne gefühlt 100 Grad heiß war. Scott Kennedy schmolz geradezu dahin, bedankte sich mehrfach beim Publikum und betonte, wie besonders dieser Abend für die Band sei – schließlich handelte es sich um die bisher größte Headliner-Show ihrer fast 20-jährigen Karriere. Ja, richtig gelesen: Bleed From Within gibt es bereits seit 2005 und mit Zenith haben sie endgültig die höheren Sphären der Metalwelt erreicht – und das vollkommen verdient.
Eine Live-Show, die ihresgleichen sucht: bodenständig, sympathisch und musikalisch auf höchstem Niveau.Wer eine energiegeladene Performance erleben will, die eingängige Melodien, fette Gitarrensoli, harte wie cleane Vocals – hier stach besonders Gitarrist Steven Jones hervor – und das Beste des modernen Metal vereint, sollte Bleed From Within live auf keinen Fall verpassen. Hervorzuheben ist auch die Arbeit von Ali Richardson am Schlagzeug, der zu den besten Schlagzeugern seiner Generation zählt. Ebenso beeindruckend ist Gitarrist und Hauptsongwriter Craig „Gonzi“ Gowans, der mühelos mit seinem Instrument verschmilzt. Abgerundet wird das Ganze durch Bassist David Provan, der das Fundament legt und den Sound druckvoll abrundet.
Wir jedenfalls kommen garantiert wieder und freuen uns schon jetzt auf das nächste Mal.
The Scots are on the loose!
With their seventh album „Zenith“ under their belt, Scottish band Bleed From Within has now embarked on their biggest headlining tour to date, and we were there for the second date at the Live Music Hall in Cologne.
The sold-out evening started right on time with Great American Ghost from Boston, USA. Since their formation in 2012, they have been known for their uncompromising ‘fuck it’ attitude. Even as the opening act, they gave their all with their unique niche style in a 30-minute set. To mention the second band of the evening without calling them the ‘support act’ would be an insult: After the Burial from Minnesota have been a fixture on the metal scene since 2004. Despite multiple line-up changes, they have fought their way through and delivered their usual polished, powerful show in Cologne.
It was clear early on that the atmosphere would be fantastic: long queues at the merchandise stand and countless Bleed From Within T-shirts in the audience spoke for themselves. After the two support acts, the temperature in the hall had already risen significantly. It was almost fortunate that pyrotechnics, as seen at the band’s festival performances, were not permitted here.
Then came the perfect start: ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’ rang out to warm up the crowd, abruptly followed by ‘Violent Nature’. From 0 to 100 pure energy – and frontman Scott Kennedy immediately showed what he’s capable of as a shouter/screamer. A perfect start. This was followed by a powerful mix of new songs from the album released in April, including ‘Zenith’, ‘A Hope in Hell’, ‘Dying Sun’, ‘God Complex’, ‘Hands of Sin’, ‘Edge of Infinity’ and, as the grand finale, ‘In Place of Your Halo’. The set was complemented by fan favourites such as ‘I Am Damnation’, “Levitate” and, of course, the classic ‘The End of All We Know’. Time flew by – an indication of how consistently high-class the song material is.
The band clearly had fun, even though it felt like it was 100 degrees on stage. Scott Kennedy was practically melting away, thanking the audience repeatedly and emphasising how special this evening was for the band – after all, it was the biggest headlining show of their nearly 20-year career. Yes, you read that right: Bleed From Within has been around since 2005, and with Zenith, they have finally reached the higher echelons of the metal world – and deservedly so.
A live show that is second to none: down-to-earth, likeable and musically top-notch. If you want to experience an energetic performance that combines catchy melodies, fat guitar solos, hard and clean vocals – guitarist Steven Jones stood out in particular here – and the best of modern metal, you should definitely not miss Bleed From Within live. Also worth mentioning is the work of Ali Richardson on drums, who is one of the best drummers of his generation. Equally impressive is guitarist and main songwriter Craig ‘Gonzi’ Gowans, who effortlessly merges with his instrument. The whole thing is rounded off by bassist David Provan, who lays the foundation and rounds off the sound with power.
